Welcome to DESHBANDHU COLLEGE FOR GIRLS LIBRARY

About the Library

Deshbandhu College for Girls was established in 1955 by a group of young learned men led by Dr. Hemen Dasgupta,Secretary of Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das, and the great nationalist leader of India. The mission of these people was to set up a girls’ college in the newly developed southern suburb of Calcutta for the women of the middle and the lower middle class families from the financially weaker sections of the society to impart much-needed quality teaching. The endeavour of the founder members of the college were to provide extra-mural assistance and self-accessible materials to the students. They tried hard to drawspecial attention towards building a good library. Fortunately, a number of renowned educationists like Professor Nihar Ranjan Roy, Professor Pratul Chandra Gupta, the eminent Lawyer Professor Radha vinod Paul and others were associated with the college. Professor S. R. Ranganathan, the father of Indian Library Science, opines “Library is a growing organism`` one of his Five Laws of Library Science. At present, the total holdings of library, 23,325 as on 31.01.2025, includes a good number of reference collections also. Hence the college library becomes an integral part of our academic platform to provide pertinent information and dissemination of knowledge to all-round development of the concerned communities at large.
